Protest Against Claiming the Sovereign Lands of Nepal as Indian Territories

High Commissioner sir/madam,

A territorial map published by the Government of India in October 2019 wrongly portrays Nepali sovereign territories Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura as parts of India. Historical records undoubtedly prove that these areas belong to Nepal. The global Nepali diaspora is deeply hurt by this inaccurate publication by the Indian authorities. Non-Resident Nepali Association UK, an organization of diaspora Nepali living in the United Kingdom, denounces this unjust act of Government of India. It is especially painful to us as Nepal has always pursued the policy of friendship with India, and hundreds of thousands of Nepali Gourkhas have continued to make supreme sacrifices during their services in security forces of India for the protection of territorial sovereignty of India.

There have been some disputed regions at the Nepal-India borders for more than a century. Some of these issues are being discussed between high-level authorities of the Foreign Ministries of both countries. However, without waiting for the conclusions and recommendations of these undergoing diplomatic dialogues, and mutually agreed upon resolutions, the unilateral publication of a territorial map by India violates the international norms of dealings between two sovereign nations on equal footing. We deplore such action with the strongest words possible.

We express our full support to the government and people of Nepal in their pursuit of taking full control of territories belonging to them and call on the government of Nepal to stand firmly against hegemonic attitude and practices of Government of India. We also ask Indian Government to immediately rescind the map showing sovereign Nepali territories as areas belonging to India.

We stress that any border issues between these two friendly neighbours should be resolved through bilateral diplomatic channels.

Sincerely,

Punam Gurung Phadindra Bhattarai
